A JK-12 pluralistic school that engages students in an exemplary and inspiring general and Jewish education.

David Solomon, Director of Arts EducationThe theater program allows a CESJDS student, if only for a few moments, to become someone entirely new and think about the world through the eyes of another. All the while, our students are strengthening public speaking skills, developing self-discipline and gaining self-confidence. And, arguably, no other discipline better develops students’ abilities to work as a team: students running the lighting board, sound board and stage crew must work closely with the actors to transform a universe before the eyes of the audience. These theater skills are woven within the academic curriculum and they taught independent of the curriculum as well: While students in English, Hebrew and Foreign Language classes actively study texts on their feet, students may also take Theater courses throughout their middle and high school careers at CESJDS. Theater courses emphasize improvisational games, character creation, scene study and playwriting. Students also learn the basics of technical theater as well.

The CESJDS theater season consists of a high school musical, a middle school musical, and a high school play held in our 300-person theater. Past shows have included The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Young Frankenstein, Xanadu, Shrek, Man of La Mancha, Curtains and Aladdin. Browse our galleries below to view photos. In addition to performing on stage, students participate behind the scenes with lighting, choreography, set-making, and stage management.
