Music & Performing Arts

Music is an essential ingredient of learning, celebration, and daily activity at CESJDS. In the music classroom, students grow as listeners and performers as they explore basic musical concepts:

  • rhythm
  • melody
  • harmony
  • texture
  • form

Our comprehensive music program provides hands-on experiences for children to learn through:

  • singing
  • listening
  • moving
  • playing instruments (recorder, xylophone, African drums, etc)
  • improvising
  • composing
  • critiquing

Music is central to the balanced curriculum and is integrated across the educational program. In music class, students may learn geography, history, Yiddish, or Ladino. Equally, in their academic classrooms, they may sing and perform to enhance their understanding of subjects from math to social studies.

Jewish Music

Hebrew music classes introduce students to many styles of Jewish music from around the world, with a special focus on Israeli traditional and modern Jewish music. The curriculum fosters an atmosphere of fun, while teaching songs that enrich the children’s Hebrew literacy, knowledge of Judaics, and understanding of basic musical concepts. Throughout the year, holidays and celebrations are enriched by musical performances, such as at:

  • Model Seders
  • Kabbalat Shabbat
  • Kindergarten Siyyum
  • 1st Grade Hagigat Hasiddur
  • Yom Ha'atzmaut
  • 3rd Grade Hagigat Hanilmad

Students in 4th and 5th grade may join the orchestra and take small group lessons for:

  • violin
  • viola
  • cello
  • double bass
The students also have full orchestra rehearsal and perform at concerts and school events.

Performing Arts

From a very early age, students are encouraged to engage in performing at a variety of different levels. Through performance students learn self-confidence and develop the experience and skills necessary to excel in other parts of their academic careers at CESJDS.

Students have the opportunity to perform within the classroom. Performances we look forward to each year include:

  • Kindergarten Thanksgiving Festival
  • 2nd Grade World Music Day
  • 4th Grade Purim Play
  • 4th Grade: Ruth, The Musical
  • 6th Grade Greek Day: Antigone

Students also have a variety of opportunities to participate in music and performing arts during after-school clubs. Offerings include:

  • Shakespeare Troupe
  • CES Singers
  • Daglanut
  • Israeli Dancing
