Arts

The arts are a rich and diverse element of student experience and school life. General music, visual arts, Jewish music, choral ensemble, musical theater, Israeli dance, strings orchestra, and junior band are integrated into the basic school schedule. Walk through the doors of the CESJDS Lower School and enter a gallery of student artistic creativity at all grade levels. In all areas of the arts, what our students authentically and originally produce is breathtaking.

Visual Arts

In the art studio, students develop the knowledge and problem-solving skills needed to create, analyze, and respond to art. They are introduced to the principles of design by working with a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, collage, weaving, and printmaking.

Art education flows seamlessly between the art studios and the classrooms, where it is frequently integrated into programs and lessons

Music

Music is an essential ingredient of learning, celebration, and daily activity. In the music classroom, students grow as listeners and performers as they explore basic musical concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, and form. Our comprehensive music program provides hands-on experiences for children to learn through, singing, listening, moving, playing instruments, composing, and critiquing.

Music is central to the balanced curriculum and is integrated across the educational program. In music class, students may learn geography, history, and additional languages (Yiddish, Ladino, Japanese). Equally, in their academic classrooms, they may sing and perform to enhance their understanding of subjects from math to social studies.

Performing Arts

From a very early age, students are encouraged to engage in performing at a variety of different levels. Through performance, students develop self-confidence and experience and skills that are necessary to excel in other parts of their academic careers at CESJDS.

String and Orchestra Band

In 4th and 5th grade, your child can choose to join either our orchestra or band program, where they can learn a variety of instruments.

Lessons are taught in small groups to provide opportunity for one-on-one instruction. Weekly 30-minute lessons are held throughout the year to help them become skilled musicians. They have the opportunity to showcase their talents in an exciting spring performance.
