Math provides students with tools to make sense of the world analytically. Our classes are problem-solving laboratories where students exercise and hone their numerical and logical tools. Students are taught to reduce big problems into smaller pieces. All of our students engage in skill-building, authentic struggle, real-world relevance, argumentation and proof, conceptual engagement, and rigor. Our classes are heavy in discussion and discovery, and students are encouraged to personalize their relationships with the discipline.
Core Skills
- Algebraic fluency
- Visual and spatial thinking
- Constructing logical arguments and exposing illogical arguments
- Approaching problems with multiple strategies, with metacognitive reflection about the different options
- Modeling real-world phenomena
- Generalization of and differentiation between problem-solving approaches
