Journalism

The Journalism and Publications program is far reaching in its students’ involvement and achievements. The program offers an opportunity for students to practice journalism in a real-life context, to produce publications and participate in the publication process from top to bottom, and learn communication and time management skills that will benefit them long past their graduation day. Our publications, including our news magazine The Lion’s Tale, Dimensions Yearbook, The Melting Pot (world languages literary magazine), Reflections (English literary magazine), Loa Ha’ari (Hebrew literary magazine), Bohr Franklin Journal (student scientific journal) elevate student voice and showcase our students’ dedication and commitment to free expression.
Taking journalism classes and working for the publications give students much experience with technology and different technological programs. Additionally, student staffers develop important writing, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and time management skills.
CESJDS publications students are guaranteed freedom of the press through the Charles E. Smith Press Rights Protocol signed between the Lion’s Tale Editors-in-Chief and the administration in 2020. CESJDS was the first Jewish day school in the country to adopt such a protocol.
The program also focuses heavily on experiential learning and putting knowledge and content into a real-life context. Students immediately apply knowledge learned in a traditional classroom setting to work on the newspaper, yearbook and magazines. In addition to staff membership, student staffers have opportunities throughout the year to attend national conventions sponsored by CSPA, NSPA and JEA. At these conventions, students attend learning sessions, hear professional keynote speakers, have publications critiqued by other journalism teachers, compete in national write-off competitions and explore new cities and opportunities.
