The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking an outstanding middle school Hebrew language educator to serve as a long-term substitute for an immediate opening. Our Hebrew program is based in the proficiency model guided by the ACTFL standards for second language instruction. Classes will begin virtually in distance learning, with a plan to return to campus in a hybrid model of on-site and distance learning when it is safe and healthy to do so.

Successful candidates will have at least three years of demonstrated success teaching Hebrew as a second language to middle school students, and will have familiarity and experience with teaching the proficiency model. The ideal candidate is passionate and charismatic, and uses a student-centered approach to teaching. They are experienced in effective methods of assessment of second language skills, and are familiar with recognized standards of language instruction, in particular with ACTFL standards. Candidates demonstrate a willingness to participate fully in the life of a vibrant school community, and have demonstrated success in working collaboratively as part of a team.

Responsibilities include:

● Teaching Hebrew to students in grades 6-8;

● Teaching a weekly advisory or other experiential education course;

● Participating in team meetings to plan curriculum and to discuss student progress.

The candidate must possess a BA in Hebrew language, education or comparable certification; training with the proficiency method and/or MA in Hebrew Language Education strongly preferred. Candidates should have at least three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments. Experience in differentiated instruction, project based language learning, Collaborative Problem Solving and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred. Fluency with technology required.
