CESJDS placed third in this year's Technion Rube Goldberg machine challenge—tying with School 239 in Russia. A Rube Goldberg machine is a wacky contraption that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task by setting off a comical chain reaction. The team's machine, seen in this video, takes viewers through the history of Israel, passing by the Golan Heights, the Dead Sea, the Western Wall, etc., in 37 carefully calibrated steps. 40+ schools participated worldwide. Katz Yeshiva High School of South Florida and Le Hong Phong High School in Vietnam tied for first place. Bruriah High School for Girls in New Jersey took second place. Members of the team include Ahava Freeman (Grade 10), Rebecca Weiss (Grade 10), Matthew Rabinowitz (Grade 9), Russell Lubin (Grade 10), Matthew Lawrenz (Grade 10), Jonah Abrams (Grade 10), Austin Kaminow (Grade 10), Jonathan Morris (Grade 9), Molly Zatman (Grade 10).
