Music

Charles Ostle, Music TeacherIt is our philosophy that students should encounter a variety of musical experiences from all ends: as solo performers, as ensemble performers, as audience members and as composers: our students are producing original compositions that get performed at our concerts alongside the works of George Gershwin, Miles Davis and the Beatles.

Student musicians have many opportunities to perform and be celebrated at CESJDS. Instrumental and vocal groups perform at many events throughout the year and are showcased in two annual concerts and at Arts Chai-Lights, an annual community evening celebration of the arts. Student musicians accompany school musicals and perform for the student body at Kabbalat Shabbat on Fridays, holiday assemblies, and Daniel Pearl World Music Day. The high school a cappella choir, Shir Madness, and the high school jazz bands have been invited to perform at the Israeli Embassy, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, and the Nationals Stadium.

Music classes are offered for students who participate in a music ensemble. In these classes, students prepare for upcoming performances, study music theory and participate in rhythmic exercises, ear training, and sight singing. Students may also participate in an after-school music club.
