Lower School Arts

The Lower School art program encourages student exploration and experimentation through the use of a variety of media.  Students are introduced to the elements and principles of line, shape, color and texture, working with a variety of media. They experiment with pattern, composition, form, and size to develop an understanding of art processes and techniques.  In the course of their work, students learn to choose and evaluate ideas as they reflect on art – their own and others’.  They are introduced to the art of diverse times and cultures as the arts program is integrated with the curriculum for each grade level.

Students in the Lower School are weavers, sculptors, architects, bookmakers, illustrators, printmakers, graphic designers, puppet makers, painters, typographers, mask makers, graffiti artists, quilters, and paper cutters.  Student art is visible everywhere in our building, reflecting the process of making art and the opportunities it affords for self-expression.

Upper School Arts

The arts are central to life at CESJDS. Our Upper School campus supports a passion for self-expression through art and photography studios, a 300-seat theater auditorium, the Bernstein Music Room, a kiln and pottery wheels, and a top-of-the-line recording studio and publications office.
  • LISTEN to the marvelous harmonies of Shir Madness, the Upper School a cappella choir, and the smooth melodies of our middle and high school jazz bands.
  • APPLAUD as the curtain opens on The Drowsy Chaperone or Willy Wonka Junior, the high school and middle school musicals, and then laugh with our actors while they perform a comic mystery play as dinner theater.
